It’s almost Leap Day, a fun day that only pops up once every four years! But don’t let this extra day just hop by. It’s a chance to create lasting memories with your kiddos. After all, there are only a few opportunities to celebrate this day with your kiddos. So, make the most of it with some great Leap Day activities.
So, let’s take a look at some fun ways to celebrate. I know I can become overwhelmed by too many ideas. That’s why I kept this simple with only a few ideas because I wanted to make it easier for busy moms.
Let’s Check Out Some Leap Day Crafts:
You can’t celebrate any special day without some fun crafts.
What crafts go with Leap Year? Frogs, of course.
So, I found some simple and cute ideas with frogs to use in your Leap Day celebration. You kids are sure to find something fun they’ll want to do.
- Frog Frenzy: Craft adorable paper bag frog puppets or frog headbands, or even make origami leaping frogs! There are so many fun Leap Day activities with cute little frogs.
- Leap Year Calendars: Create personalized calendars marking this special day until the next leap year. You can print various types of calendars at calendarpedia.com for free and then have the kids decorate them. This would be a fun way to practice months of the year, counting, and days of the week. You can use it as a calendar lesson.
- Time Capsule: Fill a box with Leap-Day memories – photos, drawings, even a lucky frog-shaped charm. Bury it and open it on the next Leap Day!
Get Active and Leap Around with These Leap Day Activities:
- Leapfrog Olympics: Host a backyard Olympics with leapfrog races, long jump contests, and hopscotch challenges. Kids will love this Leap Day activity. It gets them moving and getting all their wiggles out.
- Leap Day Dance Party: Crank up the tunes and have a silly dance party with jumping moves like the Bunny Hop and the Froggy Shuffle. Plus, you could call out certain moves they need to do for 29 seconds. If you don’t have time for a dance party, you can also take a Leap Day Brainbreak.
- Leaping Scavenger Hunt: Hide clues around the house or neighborhood, each leading to a leap-themed surprise (think frog items like pencils and erasers or green items).
Fuel the Fun with More Leap Day Activities:
Food makes everything more fun! Here are some yummy ideas for snacks and a Leap Day lunch. Kids will love having frog-shaped or green treats. Plus, it is a great way to have some family time AND teach some life skills.
- Froggy Feast: Whip up some green-themed snacks and treats like frog cupcakes, kiwi slices, and green smoothies. Here are some other fun ideas you can include.
- Leap Year Lunch: For lunch, have fun frog-themed foods like celery sticks with cream cheese and olives and green apple slices with peanut butter, and make these cute sandwiches that look like frogs!
Beyond the Leap:
If you are looking for some ways to include some academics into your day, check out these ideas. You’ll find some history, reading, and writing ideas.
- Learn about Leap Year: Read children’s books and articles about the history and traditions of Leap Day. National Geographic has information you can find HERE. Plus, here is a YouTube video that explains it, too.
- Write a Leap Year Story: Encourage kids to write a story about a character who celebrates their birthday only once every four years. If you have little ones, you can write a story together, and your kids can illustrate it.
- Make a Difference: Plant 29 seeds for a future garden or donate 29 items to charity. It also works in a little counting practice.
- Leap Day Books: Take a trip to your local library and find some Leap Year picture books with the kids. They can work on some library skills and find some fun books about Leap Year.
Remember:
- Get creative: Adapt these ideas to your kids’ ages and interests. If you have older kids, they can help research Leap Year for the younger kids or read them a Leap Day picture book. Maybe they could also help set up origami leap frog races!
- Embrace the silliness: Leap Day is a day to have fun and be a little goofy! It only happens every four years, so make the most of it before they grow up.
- Make it memorable: Capture photos and videos to remember this special day for years to come.
